Aokigahara Wonderland Guided Hiking Tour

Aokigahara Wonderland Guided Hiking Tour

Peculiar virgin forest on a lava field and treasure trove of lava caves.
Wander around and discover its unique developments since the ancient eruption.

Tour Description

This private guided tour hikes into the virgin forest and caves that formed following the lava flows resulted from volcanic eruptions of Mt. Fuji over 1000 years ago.

The "Aokigahara Jukai", Aokigahara 'sea of trees' woodlands is a primeval forest that spreads out some 3,000 hectares across the foothills of Mt. Fuji.
It features a peculiar appearance as a forest that has formed on volcanic lava flows from Mt. Fuji.
With a soil depth of a mere dozen-plus centimeters, this highly unusual forest is comprised primarily of evergreen needle-leaved trees, yet contains broad-leaved trees as well. In addition, plants, shrubs, and mosses have also developed on the forest floor.

All these features have resulted in one-of-a-kind scenery and you can encounter wildlife in abundance in its natural environment.

Highlights

  • All nationally-designated natural monuments in the special protection area of Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park and within the Fujisan Mountain Area, a component part of Fujisan World Cultural Heritage

  • Wonders of the natural world in different ground levels: Above ground, Ground surface and Underground

  • Traces of where lava had flowed which resulted in clearly different vegetation today: The area with giant trees survived

  • Dynamic and mysterious scenery: The surface of the lava flow is extremely uneven and the soil is very thin, causing the trees to spread their roots out over the surface of the lava as if they were crawling
